A Musical Monday Meditation

Take My Hand, Precious Lord

“The LORD makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD upholds him with his hand.” (Psalm 37:23-24)

As the father of Gospel music, Thomas Dorsey left an enduring musical legacy of more than 3,000 songs—perhaps most famously, “Take My Hand, Precious Lord” (1932), known as Martin Luther King Jr.’s favorite song.

As you listen to the chorus in the featured cello excerpt, consider the lyrics that Dorsey penned in the aftermath of the deaths of his wife and newborn son—words that express his despair and the steadfast promise of God’s presence through it all.

Precious Lord, take my hand,

Lead me on, let me stand;

I am tired, I am weak, I am worn.

Through the storm, through the night,

Lead me on to the light.

Take my hand, precious Lord;

Lead me home.
