A Musical Monday Meditation

It Is Well With My Soul

“My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him.” (Psalm 62:5)

Some of the most beautiful art is created in seasons of darkness — and the timeless hymn, “It is Well with My Soul” is an example of this truth. Just as David wrote the psalms as music praising God during times of adversity, this beautiful hymn represents the transcendence of the spirit over pain, and the promise of hope in the midst of the most difficult of circumstances. As you listen to the first verse and chorus in the cello excerpt above, consider the lyrics, written during a time of tribulation and sorrow:

‘When peace like a river attendeth my way,

When sorrows like sea-billows roll,

Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to know;

It is well, it is well with my soul.

It is well with my soul!

It is well, it is well with my soul!
